Part 3

A teenager's library for the homeless

Sixteen-year-old Maya from Manchester loves reading. She was sad to learn that many homeless people in her city do not have access to books or a quiet place to read. 'Libraries are free, but some homeless people feel uncomfortable going there,' Maya explains. So she decided to create a small library in a homeless shelter near her school. She asked her friends and neighbours to donate books they had already read. In two weeks, she collected over 200 books.

Maya sorted the books into categories: novels, children's books, non-fiction and magazines. She found a small table and a bookshelf in the shelter's common room. She put a sign on the wall: 'Free books – take one, leave one.' She visits the shelter every Saturday to organise the books and talk to people about what they like to read. My favourite season: autumn

I love autumn because the weather is cool and comfortable. The leaves

Now I play for minutes every evening. It helps me relax after school. I also started a small band with my classmates. We practise the weekends. My parents bought me a new guitar for my birthday. I hope to in the school concert next month. Learning an instrument is hard work, but it is worth it.
