A teenager's library for the homeless

Sixteen-year-old Maya from Manchester loves reading. She was sad to learn that many homeless people in her city do not have access to books or a quiet place to read. 'Libraries are free, but some homeless people feel uncomfortable going there,' Maya explains. So she decided to create a small library in a homeless shelter near her school. She asked her friends and neighbours to donate books they had already read. In two weeks, she collected over 200 books.

Maya sorted the books into categories: novels, children's books, non-fiction and magazines. She found a small table and a bookshelf in the shelter's common room. She put a sign on the wall: 'Free books – take one, leave one.' She visits the shelter every Saturday to organise the books and talk to people about what they like to read. 'Some people prefer thrillers, others like romance or history,' she says.

The project has become very popular. People who stay at the shelter now borrow books regularly. Some have even started writing their own stories. Maya's school heard about her project and gave her a small award. She also received a donation of 50 new books from a local bookshop. Maya hopes to start similar libraries in other shelters. 'Reading helps you escape from your problems for a while. Everyone deserves that,' she says. Her dream is to study social work at university and continue helping people.

My favourite season: autumn

I love autumn because the weather is cool and comfortable. The leaves
the trees turn red, orange and yellow. It looks beautiful. I like wearing warm sweaters and drinking hot chocolate. Last weekend, I went for a walk in the park
my family. We collected colourful leaves and made a collage. I am not afraid
insects anymore, so I could sit on the grass. The park was full of children playing. Some were flying kites. I took many photos
my phone. In the evening, we went home and I helped my mum bake an apple pie. The kitchen smelled wonderful. Autumn is different
summer because there are fewer tourists. I feel calm and happy during this season. I think everyone should spend time
nature in autumn. It is good for your mind and body.

Learning to play the guitar

Last year, I decided to learn how to play the guitar. I my friend's old guitar because I didn't have much money. At first, my fingers hurt and I couldn't play any chords. I like giving up. But my friend encouraged me to keep practising. I watched online videos and learned simple songs. After two months, I play my first full song – 'Happy Birthday'. I was so proud. Now I play for minutes every evening. It helps me relax after school. I also started a small band with my classmates. We practise the weekends. My parents bought me a new guitar for my birthday. I hope to in the school concert next month. Learning an instrument is hard work, but it is worth it.
