A teenager's experience with plastic waste

Fifteen-year-old Hasan lives in a big city near the coast. Two years ago, he went to the beach with his family and was very sad to see a lot of plastic rubbish on the sand. There were plastic bottles, bags and broken toys everywhere. Some fish near the shore looked sick. Hasan decided that he needed to do something to help.

He started a small group at his school called 'Clean Our Coast'. Every Saturday morning, Hasan and his friends meet at the beach at 8am. They bring large bags and gloves. They walk along the beach for two hours and collect all the plastic they can find. Last month, they collected 15 bags of rubbish in just one morning. Hasan's teacher, Mrs. Khan, was very impressed. She asked Hasan to speak about his project in a school assembly.

Hasan also learned how plastic harms sea animals. Turtles often eat plastic bags because they look like jellyfish. This makes them very sick. Hasan talked to his parents about using fewer plastic bottles at home. Now his family uses reusable water bottles. His mother takes cloth bags to the supermarket instead of using plastic ones.

Hasan's dream is to see a beach with no plastic at all. He knows this will take a long time, but he is not going to stop. He believes that if more young people join him, they can make a big difference. 'Even small actions are important,' he says.
